LEARNING AT LONG STREET 🖤👐❤️
Subject: Integrated Learning - Past, Present and Futures
Year: Reception & Year 1
Teacher: Miss Knapton, Mr. Smith, Mrs Zhao
As part of Reconciliation Week, students learned that historically First Nations peoples have not been treated fairly. Students viewed the story 'Say Yes', which tells the story of a young girl and her friend Mandy. Mandy was Aboriginal and didn’t have the same rights as her friends. She couldn’t attend the same school or even visit the local swimming pool! Many people realised this was not fair and wanted to change the law. On May 27, 1967, Australians voted YES, and the law was changed.
💬 Quinn reflected, “It wasn’t nice how they were treated,” and Violet shared, “I’m happy they voted yes so Aboriginal people could go places and do things.”
👐 To show our support for reconciliation, Room 7 created a Sea of Hands display. The hands represent our commitment to recognising when something is unfair and standing up for change. Each hand is a symbol of respect and kindness.
🪃 Later in the week, Miss Knapton read 'Kookoo Kookaburra', a story about a kookaburra who often told jokes that made fun of others. Eventually, he listened to Uncle Googaguga who said, “Kindness is like a boomerang—if you throw it often, it comes back often.”
☀ Students discussed and recorded ways they can show kindness to others in their lives.
