LEARNING AT LONG STREET 💧📏

Years: 5 and 6 (Room 11)
Teacher: Mrs Langdon
Subject: Mathematics

Context: We have been learning about different types of data (categorical and numerical) and have been practicing collecting and presenting this data on different graphs (bar graphs and line graphs).

Task Description: Students in pairs created their own puddles, outlined them with chalk, measured the diameter with rulers and recorded this information. Students then checked on their puddles every few minutes and remeasured to see how much their puddles shrunk over time. They then graphed this numerical data on line graphs to show this change.

LEARNING AT LONG STREET 🚮 ♻️

Years: Reception and 1
Teachers: Miss Knapton & Miss Stirling
Subject: Integrated Learning

Context: This semester, students in Room 7 have been learning about how to care for places. We are completing a ‘Wipe Out Waste’ challenge this term. Every Wednesday we count how many pieces of plastic packaging we have in our lunch boxes with the aim of reducing the number each week. At the start of the term, Room 7 students counted 163 pieces of plastic packaging in their lunch boxes. Students then set a goal to reduce this to 89 pieces by the end of the term.

Incursion: Last week, we had Charuka from Whyalla City Council visit our class to talk about the different coloured bins we can use when disposing of our rubbish. Students completed a waste sort activity where they had to select pieces of rubbish and place them in the correct bin. Charuka gave Room 7 a new food scraps bin.

We learned simple ways to work towards reducing the number of plastics at school:
🫙 Using reusable containers rather than zip lock bags
🍌 Packing whole fruits and vegetables that don’t require packaging such as bananas, apples, pears, mandarins, oranges etc.
🍿Buying snacks in bulk (rather than individually packaged snacks) and portioning them into smaller containers.
🍴 Replacing plastic straws and cutlery with reusable options
🤗 Encouraging children to help pack their lunch boxes

🆓 Families FYI - Chakura told us that families can collect their own FREE food scraps bin from the council!
