👷 The Mini STEM Showdown is an exciting series of Middle Primary STEM tasks for students to solve!
🦅 This week, learners designed and constructed a balancing bird using 3 tooth picks and modelling clay. The toy must be engineered to balance. This toy doesn’t just stay upright - if you bump or tip it, it sways and swings before coming back to where it started. We looked at the balancing bird and got it to balance on a pyramid and balance on the end of their finger! Just like an engineer, the students needed to refine their design to keep making it better or ‘Beautiful’. We had lots of success in making our birds balance using a variety of different styles and builds.
🏗️ We progressed in our learning by discussing and researching what is an engineer and what does one do as a job.
🧑💻🧑🏭🧑🔧🧑💼 What is an engineer?
An engineer is someone who designs and builds things to solve problems or make life better! Engineers use their combined knowledge of mathematics, science, technology and creativity to create things like bridges, buildings, machines, and even computers. They use the engineering design process which involves thinking about how things work, making plans, and repeatedly testing their ideas to make sure everything works safely and properly.
There are lots of different types of engineers, some of these engineers are:
🌉 Civil engineers design things that don’t move like roads, bridges, and buildings.
✈️ Mechanical engineers design things that move like engines, machines and robots.
🖥️ Software engineer design code and apps for computers and phoneden
